About us

When the idea of Anothertravelguide.com, an internet magazine for independent travelers, came to life in 2007, the design hotel boom was at its peak. Everybody was rushing the latest restaurants that had an interior designed by Starck – it all seemed so interesting. Admittedly, we also joined the rush. But there came a point when we simply felt like an overfed pet, and we realized that all of it was mostly just for show. So we started looking for family restaurants where mom was the cook; places that felt real, authentic. Unconventional places and the uncommon people that created them. The economic downturn and other world events have undoubtedly left their mark. The way that people travel has changed – in terms of what they look for and how they look for it. And the rhythm of life has quickened as well; no one is surprised to hear that book reading keeps falling in popularity. The tempo has become too fast for the reading of books. From this point of view, traveling has, perhaps, become a kind of alternative to the book. It contains all of the best features of books – an exciting plot-line (the uniquer the better), surprise-filled experiences, and new knowledge. One could say that there are two choices: a trip that is like a short story (for example, a few nights spent at a wonderful new hotel at the foot of Mount Kazbek, where the view from your local-designer-fashioned room includes meadows with grazing horses and craggy mountaintops in the distance... if you want, you can spend the whole day in bed, gazing out the window when you pause and glance up from your book...); or, a novel – a proper hike (on foot) through the Himalayas, passing through the occasional small village and making do with little comforts, if any. A unique experience nevertheless, incomparable to anything else.

Anothertravelguide.com is not a tourism agency. We all have our own daily zones of interests and jobs – in fields such as art, theater, fashion, cultural journalism – but traveling is the vice that unites us and inspires us.

Anothertravelguide.com gives you keys – keys to notable art and cultural events; to unusual, often only locally-known spots; to places of lodging that are themselves a trip within a trip; to destinations that are refreshingly out of the ordinary, or to ones that are seemingly well-known, but have intriguingly hidden sides to them; to projects created by exceptional people. And lastly, we encourage you to share your own experiences: tell others your travel story, be it a haiku or an opus!
