Hurts. The Happiness Tour. Europe, Japan

The Manchester-based Hurts duet was definitely the British pop debut of the year in 2010. Visually and musically they are inspired by the 1980s, the era of Margaret Thatcher's rule and the New Romanticism. If you look at their pictures, Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson are more like two Burberry models than honest musicians: their whole image - the faultless haircuts, costumes, movements and videos - is pure perfection. Their music is emotional electronic pop ballads, clearly inspired by the likes of Bryan Ferry, Depeche Mode, New Order, Talk Talk and Camouflage. The talented stylisation is perceived as a conceptual gesture, never a banal borrowing from the 1980s legacy. September 2010 saw the duet release their debut album under the title of Happiness; one of the tracks features the vocals of Kylie Minogue, the pop diva having thus opened the door to the pop elite to the pair of Mancunian lads.
