Blue Times, Kunsthalle Wien, Until January 11
When cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man to journey into outer space in 1961, he exclaimed in awe: “The Earth is blue." French painter and photographer Yves Klein, who loved the colour blue, is alleged to have said in jest that Gagarin simply saw the opening of Klein’s personal exhibition in space. For Klein, who patented his famous blue pigment as International Klein Blue (IKB), blue was not just a colour, but a spiritual and universal symbol of cosmic power that transforms life itself into a work of art. Blue is the colour of romanticism and of melancholy. Over 80 percent of the Western population chooses blue as their favourite colour. The Blue Times exhibition in Vienna showcases the work of Klein and more than 30 other artists, providing fascinating look at the colour’s multi-layered connotations.
