Wiener Festwochen, May 9 – June 15, 2014
The Wiener Festwochen is one of the oldest, largest and best international theatre and music festivals in Europe. Its programme includes a wide range of events, from classical theatre plays and monumental opera productions to powerful dance and other performances at various venues in the city.
This spring, opera buffs will be treated to a programme that is being set up by the new artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, Markus Hinterhäuser. Among the highlights are Christoph Willibald von Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice, directed by Italian metaphysical theatre master Romeo Castellucci and conducted by Jérémie Rhorer (France). A callous take on the temptations that befall separated lovers awaits the viewers of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Così fan tutte, performed by the Teatro Real of Madrid, in partnership with Belgian conductor Sylvain Camberling and Austrian film director Michael Haneke.
