International Jazzkaar Festival, April 20 – 29
Events usually get awarded with new venues on their round anniversaries, yet Tallinn International Festival Jazzkaar is an exception. The festival, taking place for the 23rd time this year, moves to a brand new home by the sea already now. 1170 m² large Marina Pavilion is located in the Tallinn harbor territory next to the Old City and comprises also an exhibition hall, cafés and an open-air recreation area. The festival's program will take jazz lovers also to Kalamaja - one of the oldest and most colorful districts of north Tallinn. It features ancient wooden buildings of 1920s and 1930s side by side with large industrial complexes that now serve as settings for art and cultural events and activities. Throughout the festival, young musicians from the Georg Ots Music School will turn the streets and parks of Tallinn into a resonating jazz music scene.
Side by side with the most outstanding Estonian jazz musicians, the festival will present world-renowned jazz masters and groups, e.g., Jan Garbarek Group feat. Trilok Gurtu (Norway-India), Lizz Wright (USA), The Brand New Heavies (Great Britain) and Amadou & Mariam (Mali). The latter will perform at Jazzkaar 2012 opening concert in the framework of their new album tour in Europe.
Jazzkaar history can be traced back a long time before Estonia regained its independence. At that time, Estonian composers and musicians Valter Ojakäär and Uno Naissoo, despite of jazz prohibition, managed to safeguard and strengthen sprouting jazz music traditions. Then came 1990s and melted down the frontiers, allowing world jazz to enter Estonia and local jazzmen to share stage with world-scale stars, like Ray Anderson, Steve Lacy, Leroy Jenkins and Roscoe Mitchell Quartet.
Today, Tallinn has become an important stop on the map of world jazz festivals. Jazzkaar spans all the levels of jazz, from mainstream to total avant-garde and much more. The festival offers also an ample insight into the world music, particularly blues repertoire.
Jazzkaar Agency organizes about hundred jazz events every year, with jazz sessions across the country and winter, spring and autumn series of jazz concerts in small town concert halls.
