Baltic Circle Theatre Festival. 18 – 22 November 2009
The Baltic Circle is one of the most exciting theatre festivals focusing on performing arts in the Nordic countries; it is usually held in Helsinki annually in November. The name of the festival says it all: the emphasis is placed on trends and events in the neighbouring countries located around the Baltic Sea. However, that's not where the concept ends: the Baltic Circle is keen to bring together performing artists from different countries to work on joint projects, co-producing and producing, creating a shared theatrical territory that doesn't exist in everyday life. The Baltic Circle is interested in trajectories of development - in works that signify the beginnings of a quantum leap in theatrical vision.
This year's Baltic Circle festival brings together theatre projects from Estonia, Finland, Norway and Russia.
One of the most singular productions featured at the festival is Dinner in the Dark, an invitation extended to the spectators to follow their senses - their hearing and taste, combining the sonic and culinary arts in a single event performed at a restaurant, in total darkness. The sonic score for the production was created by the Finnish director Kimmo Modig who based it on his own personal „sonic diaries" compiled in different cities: in Gothenburg and a number of locations in Switzerland, Germany and the United States. The meal features three different menus, for carnivores and vegetarians, and sees the gastronomic experience elevated to the status of an art form.
50 Lovely Ways to Die, an Estonian and Finnish co-production, one the other hand, promises to become one of the most emotionally-charged works at this year's festival; it is a compilation of the stories of a number of people who are dying or are willing to die in the name of love.
