MaerzMusik New Music Festival, March 15-24
This international festival has a transcontinental scope, incorporating the most diverse expressions of new music - from compositions by well-known artists to opuses that were only completed this year. This year's programme focuses on two aspects. One of them involves the use of percussion instruments in new music, with a comprehensive selection of works highlighting the potential of these instruments from the most diverse angles. The festival opens with Michael Gordon's Timber, which will be performed by six percussionists sitting on logs.
The second point of focus is on music from the Islamic Mediterranean countries, revealing a vast diversity of sound in works by composers from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, Sudan and Morocco.
This year, MaerzMusik is taking place in seven spots in Berlin - from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Berghain Club, with the Berliner Festpielhaus, by tradition, serving as the main venue.
