MaerzMusik Festival of New Music,17–25 March 2012

The Berlin festival of new music is held by Berliner Festspiele, one of the most powerful cultural institutions of the German capital - a fact that guarantees a truly ambitious and exciting programme. The MaerzMusik Festival stands for interpretations of the key pieces of contemporary classical music, essential first performances and discoveries of completely new and hitherto unknown works.
This year's festival marks the significant anniversaries of two radical yet completely different composers: the centenary of John Cage and the 60th birthday of Wolfgang Rihm: hence the programme centred on these two artistic opposites.
MaerzMusik has taken an in-depth interest in the development of John Cage's fundamentally innovative approach to music and the interdisciplinary expansion of the concept of music in the works of composers and artists representing the next generations. The John Cage and Consequences programme comprises a number of concerts and an international symposium.
The festival opens with Song Books, a new production by Joan La Barbara, one of John Cage's closest associates; it is a collaboration with the New York Ne(x)tworks and Berlin Maulwerken. The very next day will see La Barbara's latest piece: his 103 for the expanded orchestra, performed simultaneously with One, 'a film without subject'.
The event promoted by the organisers as the sensation of the festival will be a series of three concerts by La Monte Young, the 'inventor' of minimalist music, performed along with Dream Light, a light installation by Marian Zazeela. This may be the last chance to see the legendary artist appear in Europe: he practically does not travel (has stayed at home for the last decade), and MaerzMusik is a complete one-off in the rhythm of life of his choice.
