Barbie the Icon, Complesso del Vittoriano. Through 10 October, 2016

As it has been widely reported, the Barbie Doll celebrated its 57th birthday this year in a truly radical manner – she was finally allowed to become “realistic” (i.e. appearing with three different body types), and instead of eating birthday cake, she was featured on the cover of Time magazine. It is not surprising then, that along with this major change in paradigm concerning dolls (and the whole beauty industry, in fact), a wave of everything Barbie has taken over the world. One of these celebratory exhibitions can be seen in Rome’s Complesso del Vittoriano. Befitting an Eternal City, Rome has chosen to highlight Barbie’s supernatural ability to withstand all fashions, controversies and urges, all the while never losing her status as icon – not to mention her global presence, achieved by having taken on the visages of numerous celebrities (Madonna, Audrey Hepburn, Jennifer Lopez, etc.) and 50 different ethnicities.
