Ugo Rondinone. Giorni d'Oro + Notti d'Argento, MACRO Testaccio and Mercati di Traiano. Through 1 September, 2016
At the moment, there are two installations by the Swiss-born, New York-based artist Ugo Rondinone on view at two separate locations in Rome: at the MACRO Testaccio contemporary art museum, and at the historic Trajan’s Market. Rondinone – whose signature style is a combination of psychedelics, advertising and daily life – has transformed both pieces into surreal fantasy worlds. At Trajan’s Market, we see five aluminium casts of hundred-year-old olive trees, painted white; the originals from which they were taken still grow in Puglia, which is from where Rondinone’s ancestors emigrated.
At MACRO Testaccio, on the other hand, you’ll see 45 life-size figures of clowns. Titled “Vocabulary of Solitude”, each clown depicts a daily activity from regular life – sleeping, washing, writing, reading, cleaning, drinking, breathing, cooking, etc., along with the inescapable loneliness that goes along with each of them.
