Marina & The Diamonds

Marina Diamandis, the latest British pop sensation, was born in the U.K. to a Greek father and Welsh mother. At the age of 18, the young singer left home for London where she attended dance classes and appeared in Elton John's Lion King musical at the West End. Eventually Marina started to play gigs where she also sold hand-made CDs with her recordings. It was a couple of years ago that her name became famous among the online community: the singer acquired a dedicated fan base: her loyal admirers followed her from city to city, never missing a gig. In spite of all that, the actual debut album of the 24-year old singer - The Family Jewels - was released as late as in February 2010. Marina writes vivid and somewhat pompous-sounding pop songs; her distinctive manner of singing is slightly reminiscent of Shakira, Gwen Stefani and Regina Spektor. She sings „songs with character"; her popularity has not yet reached gigantic levels and Marina herself has not lost all human traits and turned into an institution like Lady Gaga. The singer treats the admirers of her talent with the utmost respect and gratitude: for instance, she explains that Marina & The Diamonds, the name of her musical project, does by no means refer to a band: Marina, of course, is she, Marina Diamandis; The Diamonds - it's her fans.
