Steve McCurry – “Photographs from the East”, Museum für Gestaltung – Schaudepot, 3 July – 18 October, 2015

American photographer Steve McCurry's image of a green-eyed Afghan refugee girl – the one that made the cover of National Geographic Magazine in 1985 – has become an icon of our times, sometimes even called the 21st-century's “Mona Lisa”. As a result, McCurry has become the most influential photographer of our day. During his career as a photographer, McCurry photographed life in the so-called hots-spots of the world – Beirut, the Philippines, Cambodia, the former Yugoslavia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tibet. In the case of McCurry's subjects, “life” meant the scars and effects of war as seen in their faces and in their struggle for daily existence; tangential themes include the consequences of globalization and the extinction of cultures. McCurry has received many prestigious awards during his career, including Magazine Photographer of the Year, which is given by the National Press Photographers Association. This exhibition at Zurich's Museum of Design gives a superb glimpse into the essence of an extraordinary career.
