Serpentine Gallery Summer Pavilion, from June 8

The Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens every year commissions architects of worldwide acclaim to design its summer pavilion, which has become a symbol of London's summer lifestyle. It serves as a showcase for contemporary architectural tendencies and a space for experimentation, too. Among its designers have been such names as Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor, Herzog& de Meuron and others. This year the pavilion will be designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. He is the 13th and, at his age of 41, the youngest architect to be selected for this project. Inspired by organic structures, such as the forest, the nest and the cave, Fujimoto's buildings inhabit a space between nature and artificiality. The pavilion construction is lightweight and semitransparent, resembling a cloud of fog that rests over the lush and verdant park. Occupying about 350m² of lawn in front of the Serpentine Gallery, the construction is built of 20mm steel poles. It has two entrances with a café sited in the center of the gallery, and the same way as every year, the summer pavilion will offer lectures, performances and a wide array of other cultural activities.
