Gogol Bordello

By now, it is safe to describe Gogol Bordello as a legendary band: the heroes of the alternative New York punk scene have become the darlings of rock mainstream. The frontman of Gogol Bordello, the lively and charismatic Eugene Hütz, arrived in New York from his native Ukraine in 1988 with 400 dollars in his pocket and a guitar over his shoulder. It was in New York that his multi-ethnic gypsy punk Gogol Bordello team was born. The insane energy charge of their gigs first turned the obscure band into a sensation of the New York stage, bringing them world fame later. Gogol Bordello's style is an explosive mixture of punk, klezmer, ska, polka, samba, salsa and reggae. Alongside Eugene Hütz, the band's line-up includes two Russians (violin and accordion), an Israeli (guitar), Ethiopian (bass), Latin American (percussion) and Brazilian (rap vocals): musicians representing various cultures, age groups and backgrounds.
Late April sees Gogol Bordello release their new album entitled Trans-Continental Hustle, collaboration with Rick Rubin, one of the greatest contemporary record producers. A noteworthy fact - Gogol Bordello is the favourite band of Madonna who, having launched a filmmaker's career, offered Eugene Hütz the leading role in Filth and Wisdom, her debut feature film. It was Gogol Bordello that inspired the gypsy segment of Madonna's 2008/2009 tour show. She is not likely to miss the opportunity of seeing Gogol Bordello's new programme. Who knows, she might even join her idols in a gypsy dance at their London gig.
