The History Museum of Armenia is a subsidiary of the National Museum, founded in 1919 as Ethnographic-Anthropological Museum-Library. The holdings of the History Museum currently comprises some 400 000 objects which are divided into Collections of Archaeology, Ethnography, Numismatics and Negatives. The collection is still being expanded, adding the finds of the latest archaeological excavations. The museum's permanent exhibition is designed to present an exhaustive overview of the Armenian culture from the ancient times to the modern days; the exhibits include a unique collection of Bronze Age artefacts and examples of the culture and art of the ancient state of Urartu, as well as evidence of cultural ties between the ancient Armenia and Egypt, Assyria, Iran, Rome, the Byzantine Empire and other civilisations. The museum's collection of ancient vehicles, boasting wooden carts and chariots dating from 15-14th centuries BC, as well as their miniature bronze replicas, belongs to the highlights of its holdings. The Numismatics Collection comprises historical gold, silver and copper coins of Milesian, Greek, Macedonian, Parthian, Roman, Arabian, Byzantine and Armenian origins, found in the territory of Armenia. Examples of the 4th and 5th-century Christian culture - architectural details, sculptures and ceramics - from the excavations in the ancient cities of Dvin, Ani and the Fortress of Amberd are also extremely interesting.
