Sergei Parajanov Museum

The museum dedicated to the great Armenian director and artist Sergei Parajanov is one of the most popular in Yerevan. To quote a guidebook to Armenia, "the best museum in Yerevan is small and idiosyncratic, the would-be final home of famed Soviet filmmaker Sergei Parajanov" - the typical Caucasian-styler building was chosen by the director himself; however, the museum opened only in 1991, a year after Parajanov's demise. Today, it has become one of the most significant cultural centres in the Armenian capital, hosting a diversity of events and exhibitions and receptions: the museum has been visited by leaders of many countries and a number of great figures of art and culture, from Wim Wenders to Paolo Coelho. The museum is dedicated to Parajanov's vast artistic and literary heritage; the permanent exhibition includes two memorial rooms and a display of his installations, collages, assemblages, drawings, puppets, hats, unpublished film scripts and librettos, as well as posters and awards from international festivals, letters from Federico Fellini, Andrei Tarkovsky, Yuri Nikulin, et al. The museum has organised some 50 exhibitions in many cities, including Cannes, Athens, Tokyo, Rome and Los Angeles (Hollywood).
