On 2 November, the new building for Tel Aviv's Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art opened its doors to the public. The event occurred thanks to the support of the Los Angeles art collectors, Herta and Paul Amir (construction costs are estimated to have been 55 million dollars). An addition to the existing museum complex, it was designed by the architect Preston Scott Cohen and serves as a visually eye-popping glass and concrete continuation of Tel Aviv, a city known for upholding a tradition of modern architecture. 430 polished-cement rectangular modules make up the building's outer shell, resulting in a dynamic and organic extension to the already existing museum. The building's central interior element is a light-infused atrium, interwoven with a spiral staircase that affords access to the museum's five floors of spacious galleries and provides even the lowest levels of the building with natural light. It is a widely accepted opinion that this new architectural statement will make Tel Aviv an important spot on the world map of contemporary art.
In honor of the Herta and Paul Amir Building's opening, an especially prepared exhibition of environmental works of art by Anselm Kiefer (a French-based, German artist taught by Joseph Beuys) has been put together. Most of the pieces on display come from the artist's private collection, and Kiefer himself was involved in the formation of the exhibition, as its themes touch on Jewish history. Of particular interest are the pieces that Kiefer created just for this exhibition, which include five new sculptures from the series - Women of Antiquity, five monumental paintings done in mixed technique, three large-format wood carvings, as well as the environmental installation, Shevirat Ha-Kelim: The Breaking of the Vessels, which was created on-site.
The Tel Aviv Museum of Art possesses an impressive collection of Israeli art, representing all of the most notable artists and movements in art. Currently, the Amir Building is also home to the museum's permanent exhibition, which consist of 250 works of art, spanning the period of 1906 to the present day.
