Esplanade - Theatres

During the day it looks like a hedgehog, at night it's like a sequined bra; locals, however, have dubbed it Durian, after the durian fruit, very popular in Asia but, because of its horrible stink, unbearable for the European nose (think sweaty men's socks seeped in sugary water and other stuff, depending on your imagination); the sickly-sweet taste reminiscent of rotten onions makes it unpalatable for their stomach. Unsurprisingly quite a few hotels have forbidden the fruit on their premises. Anyway, the Esplanade Theatres are one of the most impressive architectural objects in Singapore but its location - on the waterfront - one of the most exclusive in the whole city. Look up all the current events - concerts and exhibitions - at www.esplanade.com. The complex comprises a concert hall with 1600 seats, a theatre, rehearsal studios, the open stage, the Singapore Art Library etc. You will find a tiny yet excellent teashop in the shopping mall on the ground floor.
