Essence

Singapore is one of the tiniest countries in the world, and also one of the cleanest and best organised cities on earth. It is unofficially hailed as the gastronomy capital of Asia and does its best to justify the title even in the eyes of the most demanding gourmets. Singapore is the place to go if you want to enjoy some great food, from run-of-the-mill eateries to haute cuisine. Although majority of the population are Chinese, Singapore is a mix of practically all the cultures (and, consequently, cuisines) of the world: Malaysian, Indonesian, Arab, European, Indian... Fusion cuisine is a relatively new thing in the west (popular since 1980s); in Singapore this tradition has been around for centuries. The east-meets-west trend in the Singaporean menu is played out with the superb skills of a virtuoso pianist. If you enquire after the best restaurant, you will be immediately asked in reply: which cuisine are you interested in? Singapore is very green and is sometimes also called the Garden City of Asia. Tiny gardens with green trees have even found their way up the skyscrapers, between the floors - not to mention a rainforest of its own, full of birds and monkeys. There was a time when Singapore went through a phase of the exaggeratedly modern architecture but luckily it turned out to be just a passing fad and the city has come to its senses now, clearly understanding that with old buildings the charm would go as well. There are not that many places in the world where you can find an Indian temple next to a skyscraper. Recently Singapore has been experiencing a real design explosion; it is now more than just a business junction, it is a style destination and has been awarded the prestigious Condé Nast Publications award as one of the top destinations.
