Shokhmansur or Zelyoni Bazaar

As any self-respecting Asian city, Dushanbe has several markets, yet Zeleniy Bazaaar is the most compact and colorful one. There you can obtain almost anything - from scones to variety of fruit, nuts and raisins (also typical to the area orange-color lemons), as well national costumes. The latter ones present a genuine feast for tour eyes - colorful Tajik ornaments are ones of the most beautiful among Central Asian countries. They are seen in the streets as well, where Tajik women, dressed in typical long tunics and pants, resemble bright flowers. The national costumes tend to become more and more popular - they are comfortable, suitable for the local climate and affordable as well. Fabrics range from 2 to 50 dollars per meter at the market, the cheapest choice being poplin, but the most expensive one - silk and satin. Tailoring costs another 2.5 to 70 dollars, depending on complexity (with embroidery or without).
It might be tough time to keep ones sanity in the market, especially when it comes to fruit and nuts, and only remembering airplane luggage limits can bring you back into reality. Raisins and nuts cost average of 35 to 50 Somoni (approximately 10 USD) per kilo, making it almost impossible to resist such temptation. Without any doubt, these are the best tangible memories to bring back home from Tajikistan. Wooden boxes of different sizes are available at the market as well, so you can comfortably pack and check in your purchase at the airport. The locals claim however, that Dushanbe markets have become more pricy lately. Resellers are prevailing over farmers, and are pushing prices up quite noticeably, and it refers also to fruit and vegetables.
