Veltlin

If you appreciate good wine, than put this place down on your must-visit list. Located in the currently fashionable Karlin neighbourhood of Prague, this modestly-sized shop/wine-bar offers organic wines from countries that were once a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. One of the walls even features a black-and-white mural depicting a detailed map of the once powerful empire. And there is no lack of clever little design elements either – for instance, the glass-topped bar displays various examples of terroir: from sand and clay, to very rocky soil. The shelves are stocked with bottles that have already been decoratively labeled with price tags, thereby simplifying the shopping experience by way of a virtuoso design technique. Veltlin’s staff possesses practically encyclopedic knowledge of each winery and wine that they carry, and will gladly supply you with the smallest of details upon request. Many of Prague’s finest restaurants rely on Veltlin for their wine supply, and quite a large number of the wines offered can be sampled by the glass, on site. Bogdan Trojak, the owner of Veltlin, is not only a wine expert and vintner himself, but also a renown Czech poet. Several years ago he founded “Autentiste”, an association for natural winegrowers and makers.
