Lutter & Wegner

An excellent choice! This place has a rich and long history. Founded in 1827, Lutter & Wegner are one of the most famous makers of German sparkling wine; the word sekt is said to have been born right here. The legend has it that once upon a time the actor Ludwig Devrient arrived calling for a glass of sack (the archaic word for sherry) after a performance of a Shakespeare play at the nearby Schauspielhaus. The waiter did not quite get it but, being well aware of the guest's passion for bubbly drinks, brought him some sparkling wine. The actor knocked back glass after glass until finally sack had become sekt in his blurred speech. The rest, as they say, is history.
The speciality of Lutter & Wegner is Austrian cuisine - fine and honest Austrian fare enjoyed in fantastic atmosphere: this is one of those places where you can feel history in your bones. An excellent wine bar - more like a wine library with walls covered in wine bottles.
A sibling Lutter & Wegner restaurant opened recently in 52-53 Oranienburger Strasse; the ambience is much more contemporary but quality of the food and service - equally good.
