Art Museum Riga Bourse

In the heart of the Old Town on Dome Square stands the Riga Bourse, a grand 19th-century building built in the style of a Venetian renaissance palazzo. Over the years, it has been witness to many historic changes, experiencing a large fire which completely destroyed its fourth floor. Four years were devoted to the building's restoration and in 2011, the newly restored Riga Bourse reopened its doors to the public. This time however, it was not to house the Riga stock exchange, but to serve as an art museum, with the former Foreign Art Museum relocated to the beautiful and spacious rooms of the restored building.

The Art Museum Riga Bourse has the largest foreign art collection in Latvia, encompassing various time periods and countries, from 5 BC until the beginning of the 20th century. The collection consists of various major groups: Ancient Egypt, Roman and Greek Antiquity, the Far East and Western Europe, the latter of which makes up the larger part of the collection. Highlights include Dutch Art from the so-called Golden Period, German Romantic paintings and Belgian art from the early 1930s. There is also the largest collection of Oriental art in the Baltics, which is dominated by art from China, Japan and India. In 2009, a new valuable addition to the collection came in the form of traditional art from Indonesia.
