Latvian National Opera

The Latvian National Opera is one of Latvia's most brilliant achievements, both at the architectural and cultural level. Founded in 1918, its ability to add new substance to this classic - and, according to some, dying - musical genre has ensured the White House (as Rigans call the Latvian National Opera building) a prominent place in Latvia's cultural scene.
The high quality of its productions (including its innovative stage design) has been noted outside of the country, and has helped the opera to draw brilliant guest conductors and soloists to Riga. An unusually large proportion of the opera's audience is made up of young people, unlike the case in many other European countries.
