Café De Jaren

An ideal spot for a Sunday brunch or a soup/salad at the time of the day when majority of Amsterdam eateries are still closed. Impressive size: the main hall of the café is truly enormous. Mirrors, blond wood and tables where you can leaf through the dailies and study the concert and exhibition schedules while sipping your coffee (there is a whole stallful of brochures and one of the walls is covered in vintage theatre and opera posters) - or perhaps have lunch in a company of friends at a round table.
Café de Jaren is located next door to Hotel Doelen and Universiteits Theater, which explains the large number of students among the customers. Prices are surprisingly democratic and salads are good. This is a place to relieve your hunger without expecting any gastronomic surprises. On warm summer days the best place is the terrace on the bank of the Kloveniersburgwal Canal, an excellent spot for lazing about and watching the social life on the canal or across the water.
