Filmoteca de Catalunya

Since the beginning of this year, the Filmotheque of Catalonia has a new home - Salvador Seguí Square, in the heart of Barcelona's Raval district. In a sense, this step is doubly symbolic - with the new building, the filmotheque has not only greatly expanded its current size (6000 m2, two movie theatres with 555 seats, a library, bookstore, café, exhibition space, etc.), but has also become an important cornerstone in the city's plans to revive the neighbourhood. Known as the home of various immigrants and frequented by prostitutes and pickpockets, the Raval district was long considered to be a 'problem child' of the city, where it was wise to keep vigilant while ambling along its streets. Now, a number of important cultural institutions have moved here, including MACBA, Arts Santa Monica, the National Library of Catalonia and others, gradually turning this district into one of the most influential cultural sites of Spain.

Even though the filmotheque's taupe, modern building contrasts rather harshly with the proletarian architecture of the surrounding area, and even though prostitutes still walk the plaza in the afternoon, the new establishment has already managed to cause quite a stir amongst film lovers during its opening weeks. An ambitious program of festivals and exhibitions is planned throughout the year. Among these is the exhibition El Raval al Raval (from July 15 until November 25), whose focus is on the history of the district in the cinematographic time period from 1950 until 2010.
