To witness the current goings-on in the Geneva contemporary design scene, a visit to the Cramer + Cramer Gallery is definitely worth the while; it is owned by Philippe Cramer, one of the greatest Genevan designers. 2001 saw the New York-born Cramer who had spent his childhood in Switzerland, studied at Parsons, The School of New Design, later worked as an assistant to the famous fashion photographer Paolo Roversi, the graphic designer at Atlantic Records as well as at the Atmosphère furniture manufacturing company, create his own company Cramer + Cramer; its speciality being the manufacture of exclusive furniture and home accessories. Philippe Cramer, the creative director of the company, designs its collections in five different categories: furniture, porcelain, silverware, crystal and jewellery. His style is best described by its laconism and tendency to use naturally beautiful materials. Cramer also designed the decor and furniture for La Cour des Augustins, the first ever design hotel in Geneva which opened in 2006. As for the gallery, it is quite small and very cosy and doubles also as the designer's showroom. You will often meet Philippe Cramer in person here, and it may be difficult to come up with a better insider authority on the local art life and latest style trends. The atmosphere at Cramer + Cramer is easy and relaxed; anyone who enters the place is made to feel welcome like a guest.
