London is the flea market and vintage lovers' paradise. There's probably no need to expound on the legendary Portobello, a place that's part of practically every tourist route these days. Virginia, however, is special. It's located in Notting Hill, in the small Portland Road square you are not likely to stumble upon by accident.
The owner of the small shop that reminds of a boudoir and takes pride in its collection of high quality 1880s-1940s clothes and accessories is the former actress Virginia Bates (the shop is named after her). Her acting highlights amount to participation in a couple of horror movies and particularly the role of Dracula's wife.
The colourful image of the owner (black eyeliner, a magnificently embroidered vintage coat) blends so well with the rest of Virginia's gems (1930s evening dresses, chiffon tea gowns, embroidered gloves, shawls, capes etc.) that you feel like you have travelled to a different century as soon as you walk through the shop's door.
What's more, everything you see has been perfectly preserved. Don't pull on the door handle too harshly, just ring the bell and you will be admitted - just like John Galliano, Kate Moss, Helen Christiansen, Demi Moore or Liv Tyler who have been known to drop by - either for inspiration or for some shopping.
On the other hand, although the shop is officially open 11 am - 6 pm, it is, after all, an entirely privately-owned affair, so, if you really are considering some serious shopping, do call in advance.
