Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing

This museum is exactly what the Chinese have always dreamt of: that's how Beijing art circles commented the opening of the contemporary art centre, the pet project of the famous Belgian industrialist and art collector Guy Ullens and his wife Myriam, in the North Eastern part of the Chinese capital. The Ullenses are famous for their passion for Chinese art: they are the owners of some 1500 works by Chinese artists, which makes the couple two of the world's most influential collectors of Chinese art. The new-founded institution - the first museum of contemporary art in China - is housed in a converted Bauhaus-style building of a former ammunition factory in the 798 Area, also known as the industrial district of Beijing. This part of the city is the location of approximately 100 Chinese and international art galleries, a number of bookstores and cafés. The conversion and reconstruction of the 8000 m² Ullens Centre were overseen by architects Jean-Michel Wilmotte and Ma Qingyun. The art centre is unveiled with an exhibition dedicated to the art of the late 1980s, 85 New Wave: The Birth of Chinese Contemporary Art, open through 17 February. This period of Chinese history is usually described as "revolutionary", and this is the first time that so many works created in 1985-1990 are exhibited together. The show comprises 137 exhibits that represent a great diversity of media: painting, photography, video, object art, etc.
