Delhi's Galleries Route, Delhi

Author: Ivonna Veiherte

Nature Morte is one of the most renowned contemporary art galleries in Delhi. Located right next to it, Talwar Gallery (www.talwargallery.com) focuses on artists from the Indian subcontinent and the Indian diaspora and supports an idea that art should be freed from any geographic, cultural or religious framework.

Among the most famous Delhi galleries are two Vadehra Art (vadehraart.com) galleries - the oldest one started the year 2012 with the first ever Yoko Ono's show in India, while the other one boasts a remarkable presentation space, featuring works of the best Indian artists.

Gallery Espace (www.galleryespace.com) is one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Delhi and an active contributor to art fairs. It takes pride in showing works of celebrated Indian artists, such as Manjit Bawa and M.F.Hussain.

The contemporary art gallery Art Alive Gallery (www.artalivegallery.com) has opened an exhibition space in Gurgaon, New Delhi suburb about 36 km or 1 h drive from the center, right next to the Devi Art Foundation - the very first contemporary art museum in India.

Dhoomimal Gallery (www.dhoomimalgallery.com), representing a more conservative segment of Delhi galleries, is located in the very heart of the city at Connaught Place. It favors classical values and features famous names on India's art scene, like M.F. Hussain and Julio Dsouza.

Noteworthy one-man exhibitions and a prestigious SKODA Prize Show can be viewed at Lalit Kala Akademi (lalitkala.gov.in) art gallery, but Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Saket district of Delhi is a destination for those who wish to see a permanent collection of the prominent philanthropist and art curator Kiran Nadar (knma.in).

Palette Art Gallery (www.paletteartgallery.com) is an art and design gallery established by the design duo Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, the promoters of CUE and H2O labels.

Many interesting yet less well-known galleries can be found along Ladoo Sarai Street in Delhi.

A typical trend in India is development of art centers right next to artists' residences, comprising their workshops and adjacent exhibition spaces.
