Visalam is located in the small town of Kanadukathan, a mere 16 kilometres from Karaikudi; it is one of the hotels owned by the Chettiar community of prosperous bankers and business people. Housed in an over 70 year old building of a former local Raja's palace, Visalam opened very recently, in June 2007. The word that comes to mind thinking of the hotel is "opulent", and yet it is not all gold and jewels. The façade of the building combines the South Indian and colonial styles in a very unaffected and tasteful fashion; there is also a lot of the original woodwork still around. A swimming pool and a garden, a number of loggias and a restaurant serving local cuisine are all there - as customary in this part of the Chettinad region.
