The perfect accommodation for those who are convinced that once in Paris you have to check into the Ritz, in London spend the night at Claridge's etc. This is definitely more of a legend than a hotel: built in 1887 (to become an oasis for British colonists), it has survived through the times, including getting through a period of a slightly fossil "aging matron". It was last nipped-and-tucked and glossed over at the turn of the millennium. 705 rooms, 15 restaurants and bars, 60 shops and even a hotel museum; the list of those who have at one time or another checked into the hotel is quite impressive: Charley Chaplin, Noel Coward, Ava Gardner... Somerset Moem - a fan - once labelled the hotel a symbol of all the exotic oriental legends in the world. Raffles owns the largest collection of oriental carpets in the world: more than 700 gems of the textile art. You may not stay there, a visit, however, is a must, if only for the reason that Tiffin Room is thought to be the most exclusive afternoon tea spot in the whole of Singapore.
