Ismail, located in the new part of the city, is the best restaurant around there, and anyone in Bukhara will confirm that. It features several impressive in size dining rooms, all swarming with eaters, yet no décor or atmosphere to speak about. Upholstered chairs and table clothes seem slightly greasy, yet no one pays attention to it. Uzbek people like good food and don't bother with trifles like style or setting. Harsh sounds of Russian blockbuster on a TV provide a background, part of the scenes being shot in the streets of Bukhara Jewish Quarter. As a rule, mostly men are eating and chatting there. Local traditions are deeply rooted, and women can go out with their husbands only on very special occasions. Even at her own wedding, a bride hardly dares to raise her eyes. She would shyly sit next to her husband and sip her tea, without a word. Menu and a way of serving at Ismail are quite original as well. For the most part, food is brought on a trey, and you can choose whatever you like. Various salads come first, and then follow a standard set of three bottles of vodka and juice - Uzbeks hardly ever drink their local wine. When you finally are done and ready to leave, just go to the cashier and pay. For all that, Ismail lives up to its reputation of serving the best meat dishes in whole Bukhara!
(Typically to Uzbekistan, no one is able to give a precise address, yet any taxi driver will take you there.)
