Samarkand is home to two hotels of the well-known Malika (Princess in Uzbek) chain, one of which opened quite some time ago; the other was unveiled only recently. Make sure you don't mistake one for the other, or you may end up very disappointed. The „old" Malika used to be considered one of the best Samarkand hotels with the most charming atmosphere, its only drawback being location - in the middle of nowhere and a walking distance from no place of interest. The owners seem to have completely lost any interest in it: the bed linen is tatty, towels - grey and beds - lumpy. The „new" Malika is a different story altogether: everything is fresh and (relatively) almost perfect. The floor, of course, is laminate - but then we mustn't be too picky. The location is hard to beat - just a stone's throw from the legendary Gur-e Amir or Timur's Mausoleum.
Rates: from USD 75 for a double room.
