The Samarkand market recently underwent some serious renovation and now, like all things shiny and new, is clean, easy to navigate and fabulously colourful. At one end of the market place „lepyoshki" - flatbread baked in a special oven - are sold; the Samarkand flatbreads are said to be the best in the whole of Uzbekistan: it is heavier and stays fresh longer. Flatbread-makers never reveal their secrets which are handed down from generation to generation. Separate stalls carry nuts and all sorts of delicacies, including sugar-coated almonds and peanuts, others sell fruit, vegetables, rice... raisins prepared from freshly-harvested grapes (the ones with the red stems are dried in direct sunlight; those with yellowish-brown ones - under the roof) and spices - a feast for the eyes and smell receptors. It is virtually impossible not to give in to temptation and go overboard: shopping is a great pleasure here.
