Art Vietnam Gallery is the best - and definitely also the most surprising - of contemporary art galleries in Hanoi, if only for its unexpected scope and ambition: three floors and a number of exhibition halls housing works of art ranging from paintings and sculptures to installations, photographs and video. The gallery also hosts a small bar room and a terrace. The founder of the gallery, Suzanne Lecht, an American residing in Asia since 1982, is, without the shadow of a doubt, one of the most visible figures of the Vietnamese contemporary art scene. She started to work with Vietnamese artists from her first day in Hanoi where she moved in 1994 from Tokyo. (Incidentally, that was a year and half before diplomatic relations were renewed between the United States and Vietnam.) Her gallery has taken part in several international art biennials and today has become the number one destination for collectors, diplomats and simply art-lovers. The visit is quite an experience in itself: you climb the slightly creaky stairs, wandering from one floor to the next, surrounded by nothing but art (no attendants or „minders") - and you are very likely to bump into Suzanne herself on the top floor; vibrantly dressed and open to conversation, she seems to have been expecting your arrival... Suzanne is prepared to discuss anything, from art to the city of Hanoi. The situation in Vietnamese contemporary art is very similar to its Chinese counterpart, she says: it flourished during the past few years but seems to have slowed down due to the global economic crisis. „We just have to let this time pass," she says.
