Carpe Diem, Salzburg

Author: Mārtiņš Rītiņš

One of the ancient buildings of Mozart's native town has for two years now been the realm of one of the greatest culinary masters in Austria. Carpe Diem and Jörg Wörther, these two names are well known in the local gourmet circles. The restaurant in the heart of Salzburg is famous not only for the traditional cuisine served there but also for its original interpretation of the so-called fingerfood. Inside the crispy cones the chef has managed to conceal tuna in avocado sauce and veal tartar with mashed potatoes. Taste buds will also recognise all sorts of culinary treats from pumpkins and other ingredients. The cones look almost exactly like the ones ice-cream is served in, except the multicoloured spheres have been substituted for various delicacies. Cheeseburger is one of them - yes, instead of the greasy patty served at fast food eateries, Carpe Diem offers a sophisticated and rich culinary masterpiece, hiding inside the cone a potato chip or two as well. The two-storey building offers ample space for a restaurant, bar and café. The modern décor with the huge windows and spacious atmosphere is complimented by a fabulous summer garden - you can enjoy your meal there as well. And I mean enjoy in the literal sense of the word. The reasonable prices and wide choice mean you can choose practically anything you want, not just a single course. The guests at the tables loaded with all the delicacies look like children in a sweets shop. A hamburger look-alike foie gras and roast beef served in glasses, made especially for this restaurant! Culinary orgies continue with the dessert: it is always fresh, always made on the site.
The head chef is a restaurant trademark on two legs - star of a TV cookery show, the sociable Wörther often graces the dining room with his presence and rarely refuses to pose for a photo with his guests. Service is equally obliging, professional and attentive.
The busy atmosphere of the tiny street - closed for cars but really that quiet - is quite popular, so do book a table in advance. You may drop by for a while but you will feel like staying.
