Marking the current status of Spain as the presiding country of the European Union, the Brussels Expo centre for fine arts presents a unique exhibition comprising over 40 works by El Greco (1541-1614). The artist, considered one of the icons of the Spanish art and founders of the Spanish school of painting, was born in Crete; his real name was Doménicos Theotokópoulos. It was only after his arrival in Italy that he became known as El Greco - the Greek. In 1577, the painter, sculptor and architect El Greco moved to the Spanish city of Toledo where he stayed to live and work for the rest of his days. It was in Toledo that he was given the most significant commissions and created his most famous portraits. Despite his successful career, El Greco's works often got a mixed reception by his contemporaries and, after the painter's death, were even deemed "old fashioned". El Greco's fame revived in the early 1900s when the avant-garde movements of Modernism did a lot to restore his reputation as a great artist. Today, he is also sometimes cited as one of the historical precursors of Expressionism and Cubism.
