A family restaurant in a former sea captain's house located in a village founded in 1333. This place is very popular among the locals and practically always jam-packed. Mali Ston is a unique place in more ways than one: it is located on the shore of the only sea bay in the world where ostrea edulis - small and round oysters, once very popular in France, California and Japan - are still cultivated. In 1930 an epidemic disease destroyed all oyster colonies of this species everywhere in the world except Mali Ston where they are said to have survived due to the unique eco-situation: a fresh water stream falling into the saltwater and constant wind that keeps mixing the whole thing together. To protect these oysters Croatian authorities have even banned large-scale construction in the area, and that includes building of new hotels. At Kapetanova Kuča the waiter whose family has been running the business for generations will tell you all of that and lots of fascinating trivia as well. The pride of the restaurant is its black risotto but you also won't go wrong ordering anything else on the menu: everything is so fresh (after all, the place is a stone's throw from the sea) that you won't even notice the ghastly blue tablecloths. This is the sort of restaurant where design is irrelevant... There is also a roadside shop selling fresh oysters if you feel like taking some with you for later.

many, many times

Being married to a Bosniak and having a 2nd home in Sarajevo I have eaten at the restaurant too many times to count. It is the best seafood restaurant in the world in my opinion. I have been fortunate enough to travel the world, dining on Dutch mussels, Hong Kong prawns, Salvadorian ceviche, but nothing comes close to the fare served in this place. The oysters are to die for! The fresh fish, blitva and krompir with their house wine is outstanding; and yes we've taken many a bushel of mussels and oysters home with us to Sarajevo. The adjoing B&B owned by the same family as the restaurant is a superb place to overnight and relax. Now, the only disadvantage is living full-time in the U.S. and only getting to vist every couple of years.
