The countryside in Estonia promises a lot, mainly trees, swamps, lakes and very few people. Thus trips to the countryside do pay off for everybody, who's looking for open views and unexcited and relaxing nature. Anyhow one needs to be aware of the fact, that few people mean even fewer possibilities, where you can get your well deserved lunch after a day in the countryside.
One of these rare places, where you can taste traditional cuisine is close to the shore of Lake Peipsi in the village Kolkja. Kolkja is one of the small settlements, that are mainly inhabited by the originally Russian Old-Believers. People here have traditionally grown onions and sold them in the bigger villages and towns. Many of the typical wooden houses still have onion beds in the backyard and tell the story of a very simple lifestyle. Shiny cars, skyscrapers and cruise tourists seem really far away here in Kolkja and this resort of originality is added even more value by the local restaurant. The restaurant carries the logical name "Kala ja sibula restoran", which means "Fish and Onion restaurant", and already tells a lot about the menu. The chef serves fishsoup, onionsoup, red beet soup, vegetables and potatoes with various kinds of local fish. The meals are freshly prepared and eventhough there are only few ingredients, arranged in a tasty and appealing way. You can choose to have the Old Believers tea from a Samowar to your dish, all brought to you by a thoughful and traditionally-dressed waitress.
Also the environment provides a decent inside into the original lifestyle of the people - the decorations on the walls tell of the old-believers customs and their respect for old people. In the restaurant you are either served in Estonian or Russian - English might cause problems, though the menues are available in English.
