AHHAA Science Centre, Tartu

Author: Līga Kriķis

AHHAA Science Centre in Tartu is equally fun and educational experience both for kids and adults. A visit of this interactive museum will make you reconsider all the knowledge and comprehension that you may have had about substance, gravitation and the entire physical world for that matter before entering it.

AHHAA was established in 1997 as a special project of Tartu University. In 2011, it finally obtained its very own, brand new building, spanning over nearly 3000 m2 covered by a huge dome. This high tech project was developed by Estonian architecture office Künnapuu & Padrik. AHHAA is located in the very centre of Tartu - at the riverside, not far from Tartu market and the bus terminal. Details about each exhibit and experiment are provided in five languages - Estonian,English, Russian, Finnish and Latvian.

Although natural laws, effecting matter and energy and their interaction in time-space reality, may seem like pure magic, AHHAA Science Centre gives an easily understandable explanation for everything. Moreover, the center features many interactive displays, which allow you to have hands-on experience and discoveries. For example, test the center of gravity theory by riding a bike along a cable, suspended high in the air, which makes you feel like a real circus artist. Yet no need to fret about security - a 200 kg counterweight, attached under the bike and a safety net takes care of that! And a special simulator allows experiencing what it feels like flying in a spaceship. AHHAA offers numerous other exciting attractions - visitors can view water level changes in artificial water reservoirs, caused by dams, explore star maps in its impressive planetarium or find their way in a mirror maze. Discover strange sensations that moving walls and tilting floors can give or even sign up for special scientific experiments, involving "dry ice" or carbon dioxide, for example. Nature lovers will have a chance to see chickens hatching or observe ants' restless activity.
Aside from the permanent exhibition, the museum offers at least two temporary expositions per year.

Sited in Tartu Lõunakeskus Shopping Centre (Ringtee 75), there is AHHAA
4D Cinema. And since you are already there, perhaps you can refresh your skating skills at Lõunakeskus ice skating rink or watch an ice hockey game there.
