Chez Dominique, Helsinki

Author: Mārtiņš Rītiņš

The finest restaurant in Finland! Any meal is an adventure there. Awarded with two Michelin stars, Chez Dominique lives up to the very highest expectations and enthralls even the most fastidious gourmands. It features the first-rate cuisine, fusing French and Nordic traditions, based on local seasonal products and its chef's never-abating spirit of creativity. Hans Välimäki seems to be brimming with new ideas and spoils his guests with elaborate culinary masterpieces every night, one complimentary dish following another.
The restaurant offers three types of tasting-menus, each one coming as a surprise, as you never know what it's going to be. Soon a waiter comes over with a steaming bottle of parmesan broth. Hot and clear, it is poured over superbly fresh vegetables. Starters keep coming, and the next are fries and mussels' mayonnaise filled in a toothpaste-type tube.
Several complementary dishes are served as well. A small hollowed stone cube, filled with crisp slices of chips, seems to remind that Helsinki is a city built on rocks. And when it feels as good as it possibly can get, some more delicious treats are served - beetroot and foie gras variations, hot brioche bread with truffle butter in a tube, excellent sole and Anjou pigeon. Each course comes on different style plates, being another small surprise.
Servings are pretty small, thus overeating need not to be a concern...until it comes to desserts, of course. Ice cream is just a complementary, as sweet marvels keep arriving - apple panna cotta with fresh apple and pear juice is supplemented by a variety of chocolate dainties - ice cream, chocolate mousse and white chocolate panna cotta. Finally you feel that sweet goodies have been a little too much...
Without any doubt, one of Chez Dominique greatest assets is its wine collection. A magnificent glass cabinet is almost the first thing you see upon entering. Yet not the size is impressive but the contents, as some samples you will hardly find anyplace else - a Czech white whine made of red grapes, for example. No fear about inflated prices either for the most expensive bottle costs about 500 euro, and you may safely rely on an experienced sommelier in your choice. Moreover, a different type wine is offered with each course.
The restaurant features contrasting décor of dark drapes, white-clad tables and leather seats. Tasteful and elegant modern minimalism. Chez Dominique gathers some regular visitors who seem to be familiar to the staff already. And no wonder, as cozy settings and mellow background music offers peace and relaxation. Some tables give a glimpse thorough a small window on a busy bustle in the kitchen. Modest and amiable service is typical there, although a waiter tries to sweep up every single bread crumb on your table almost every five minutes, which may seem a little over the top sometimes. Aside a big dining hall (seating 50 guests) there is a smaller one (for up to 14 guests), suitable for private parties.
A meal for one, including wine, does not exceed 250 euro. A table for a Friday or a Saturday night should be booked in advance.
