ARS 11. Kiasma, 24 April – 27 November 2011
ARS, one of the most significant art institutions in Finland, is marking its 50th anniversary in 2011. Dating back from 1961, the ARS exhibitions have played a role of immense importance, adding new features to contemporary art in Finland. This year's ARS 11 show is dedicated to Africa in contemporary art. 30 artists are invited to take part; some of them will create new pieces especially for the exhibition: Georges Adéagbo (1942, Benin), Samba Fall (1977, Senegal), Laura Horelli (1976, Finland), Alfredo Jaar (1956, Chile), Otobong Nkanga (1974, Nigeria), Nandipha Mntambo (1982, Swaziland), Odili Odita (1966, Nigeria) and Barthélémy Toguo (1967, Cameroon). CCA, the Lagos Centre for Contemporary Art, is bringing over an exhibition by the Nigerian photographer J.D.'Okhai Ojeikere (b. 1930) which will be on view on the second floor of the Kiasma building. The curators of the ARS 11 exhibition are Pirkko Siitari, the Director of the museum; Arja Miller, Chief Curator, and curator Jari-Pekka Vanhala. This year's African theme was chosen by the former director of the Kiasma museum Berndt Arell. Satellite exhibitions will be held as part of the Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture programme as a tribute to ARS 11.
