Artek was founded in 1935 by Alvar Aalto and three other Finnish designers with the objective of advancing humane and innovative design, producing and selling furniture, lighting fixtures and interior objects, as well as promoting the „modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means." The company has stayed true to its original traditions of high quality materials, enduring design that does not fall out of fashion, high quality of execution and clean, simple lines uninfluenced by any sort of passing trends and fads. The Artek store - featuring decor designed by Alvar Aalto - is located on the main shopping street of Helsinki, nearby the Savoy restaurant. The interior, a hymn to simplicity, provides an excellent backdrop to the clean and functional lines of the displayed objects. In a way, the store also serves as a design museum: a large part of the products sold at Artek belongs to the Alvar Aalto classics or includes other carefully selected objects of modern design. The Artek furniture is based on Aalto's legendary L-System that makes the objects quite multifunctional and easy to adapt to a diversity of individual projects. Artek also features internationally renowned design brands like Vitra, Knoll and Fritz Hansen.
