Kauppahalli seafood restaurant, Tampere

Author: Anothertravelguide.com

Tampere's central market, or Kauppahalli, is a lively place with a flare of local colour that can be taken in with enjoyment, especially at breakfast and lunchtime. Built in 1901, the market building is located right in the city centre and is the largest covered market hall in Scandinavia.

However, perhaps the main reason to make a trip to the Kauppahalli is its outstanding seafood restaurant, which enjoys legendary status among the locals and is considered to be one of Finland's 50 best eating establishments. The eatery is located beside a fish and meat stand, which features a display of stuffed moose, deer and rams' heads on the wall.

Everything at this seafood restaurant is simple and unpretentious, with sitting space for about twenty patrons at two, long wooden tables and an adjacent counter. The small, wooden benches ensure that there is no class discrimination, with everyone sitting together side by side - the old and the young, students, couples, white-collar businessmen and blue-collar workers.

Lunch is served from 11:00 to 15:45, and although the menu does not offer a large choice, Kauppahalle's local, Finnish version of the classical French bouillabaisse fish stew is close to divine (at 12 euros) and deliciously filling, leaving you sated until well into the evening. The owner of the restaurant is a Frenchman, and this fact is also reflected in the menu, which could be termed as Mediterranean cuisine with Finnish ingredients.

The seafood used in Kauppahalle's dishes is fresher than fresh and tastier than tasty, obtained straight from the vendors' stalls a few paces away. As is also the case with the legendary fish market restaurant in Stockholm, this is an establishment to which you will definitely want to return. The menu here changes every day. When anothertravelguide.com paid a visit, the daily special was whitefish with salad, shrimp, scallops and octopus. The wine list features brands coming exclusively from the Alsace region of France, at 6 euros a glass.

Another good thing about this eating establishment is that you can enjoy an excellent meal without substantially emptying your wallet, unlike the case at a number of other restaurants in Tampere.

Tampereen Kauppahalli, Hämeenkatu 19 / Hallituskatu 10
