Rencontres d’Arles, through 19 September
Like every summer, the 41st Rencontres d'Arles Festival, the oldest and most significant event in European photography, offers a whole array of exciting shows. The churches, monasteries, former industrial complexes, galleries, exhibition halls and museums of the charming Provençal city of Arles are all transformed into festival venues.
Argentina is this year's official guest country; don't miss any of the surprises the Argentine artists have in store for the viewers! The impressively-sized programme opens with an extensive solo show by the nonagenarian León Ferrari, the Golden Lion winner at the 2007 Venice Biennale on view at the Saint-Anne Church; for the rest of it, head outside the walls of the Old Town, to Parc des Ateliers, the former industrial area soon to become the Festival's main venue. The forthcoming transformation will be carried out by the famous architect Frank Gehry. A show of Argentine photography is on view at the spacious Pavillon des Forges. The main subject of this year's festival - the history of rock music - is extensively featured at other exhibitions running at Parc des Ateliers. There is an exception, however - to view the exhibition much talked about long before the opening of the Festival and often cited as the highlight of the programme - a selection of pictures taken by world-famous photographers throughout the career of Mick Jagger - you will have to return to the historical city centre, to L'Eglise des Trinitaires, another church located just off the Republic Square.
