Jeff Koons: a Retrospective, Centre Pompidou, through April 27, 2015

Garnering both humongous crowds and an avalanche of harsh criticism during its showing at New York's The Whitney Museum, this retrospective of the American master of kitsch, Jeff Koons, in currently on view at Paris' Centre Pompidou. It should be mentioned that Koons, whose greatest sources of inspiration are American culture and the obsessions of modern-day consumerism, has never hidden his desire for getting as wide an audience as possible. Reminiscent of gigantic, shiny toys (of the kind found under Christmas trees), his pieces regularly break records at auction houses and preen in prominent private collections, thereby allowing Koons to sink ever deeper into a state of self-satisfaction. The orange version of his “Balloon Dog” recently went for 58 million dollars at auction – the highest price ever paid for the work of a living artist.
