The exhibition - a dedication to the temporariness of the human life and the concept of death - comprises some 160 paintings, objects, sculptures, photographs, video works and pieces of jewellery. In the history of art, the Latin term of vanitas is associated with a variety of the still life genre, particularly popular in the 17th century, focusing on reflections on human mortality. In works of this genre, the message is mostly conveyed by images like a skull that is placed next to other, completely mundane objects. The exhibition at Musée Maillol offers an unusual trip into the history of art, introduced by a number of 21st-century tributes to the subject matter; it takes us back to times long gone, reminding us that the story of death has always fascinated, scared and provoked the human mind.
