In the Shadow of Metekhi, Tbilisi

Author: Elita Gavele

In the Shadow of Metekhi is an absolutely classic Georgian restaurant that never fails to offer an opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal, lovely music and dancing and a bit of 'friendship among nations'. If you prefer to dine in a somewhat more peaceful and intimate atmosphere, choose a table in one of the smaller rooms: Papakhiani, Fisherman, Butcher, Old Tbilisi or Asian. And yet - you can't beat the view from the open-air terrace facing the River Kura. Besides, don't forget that you can only get the most joy and pleasure out of authentic Georgian food if you see sixty or so other happy people around you. A genuine Georgian restaurant just has to be loud; as for the guests, the proper way to approach your meal there is opening up, being friendly and prepared to put your heart into your eating.
The Shadow of Metekhi is the place to go to sample classical Georgian khachapuri bread; the most delicious version is boat-shaped and filled with melted cheese, topped with loads and loads of butter and a raw egg that actually gets cooked in the piping-hot butter and cheese mixture as you start to eat.
