Queensize – Female Artists from the Olbricht Collection, me Collectors Room/Olbricht Foundation, through August 30, 2015
me Collectors Room, the art space of renown German art collector Thomas Olbricht, is currently showing an exhibition solely featuring the works of women artists. Over 60 artists are being represented, including such big names as Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Cindy Sherman, and Helene Appel, among others. One of the largest sizes that beds come in, “queen-size”, has been chosen as the symbolic allusion for the show – it is an existential reference point in our journey on Earth, a place in which we spend almost a third of our lives. From birth to death, and all of the dreams, passions, delight and pain in between the two. The exhibition starts with the moment of birth and the innocent naïvety of a child, as yet untouched by the socio-political storms of life; it then moves on to confront the viewer with “the world of the woman”, which is still not free of prejudice and stereotypes, nor of the shadow of patriarchy – a condition that has been seemingly forced into a corner, yet still exists.
